HECO’s Home Energy Challenge starts soon!
The challenge teaches students and their families on Oahu how to lower their home electricity use and create positive energy-conserving behavior. HECO will provide specific energy-saving tips and offer schools diverse materials and tools focusing on the importance of energy conservation and the environment.
Families participating will compare their energy use from October 2008 – March 2009 to the same period of the next year, October 2009 – March 2010. The goal is to reduce electrical use during the second 6-month period as a result of learning about energy conservation. Schools of all sizes can compete levelly because the winner is determined by the school whose students’ home energy use decreased by the largest percentage.
Schools that reduce the most will win: $5,000 Largest Percentage Decrease Overall (Island-wide); $2,000 Largest Percentage Decrease In Each District.
If you’re a parent of an elementary school student and are interested, please remind or let your elementary school principal know to turn in the Letter of Intent to Hawaiian Electric by August 14, 2009.
